Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Trevor Tomkins (May 1941 - Sept. 9, 2022)

In the aftermath of the Queen's death, I unforgivably omitted to give more than a passing mention to the death of a member of jazz royalty - drummer Trevor Tomkins who died the following day (Sept. 9).

Although I'd heard him many times on record (see pic.) I only recall hearing him live on three occasions but they were all memorable occasions.

The first was at the Caedmon Hall in Gateshead as part of the Michael Garrick Sextet. This was in 2008 and one of my first stumbling attempts at reviewing - I even spelled Caedmon as Caedman!

The next occasion was (appropriately) at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the South Bank Centre at a concert in 2010 paying tribute to trumpet player Ian Carr with whom Trevor often worked. He'd been part of the Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet as well as the latter's renowned jazz fusion outfit Nucleus.

The final time was at the Oval Tavern in Croydon where he impressed on a lunchtime jazz/diner gig with Simon Spillett. This was in 2013 and he was as impressive as ever.

He will be sadly missed - Lance.

PS: Would you believe that, during all those years I've been spelling his name as Tompkins without correction! Forgiveness please...
