Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Tim Fitzgerald's Full House

Tim Fitzgerald (guitar); Victor Garcia (trumpet); Greg Ward (alto sax); Chris Madsen (tenor sax); Tom Vaitsas (piano); Christian Dillingham (bass); George Fludas (drums).

My kinda jazz! A tribute to Wes Montgomery by a guitarist who, in years to come, may well be receiving his own tributes.

To the best of my knowledge Montgomery didn't record for Blue Note - his main albums were on Riverside, Verve and AMI - and, whilst the horns occasionally blow in an east coasterly direction, the feel is distinctly that of California albeit via Chicago where it was recorded and Fitzgerald is very much a part of that city's ever evolving jazz scene.

Fitzgerald acknowledges the impossibility of sounding like Wes which, even if he did, would detract from his own playing and turn this album into a pastiche rather than a heartfelt tribute to an undisputed jazz great.

Apart from his guitar playing, Fitzgerald arranged most of the tunes although Madsen and Garcia also chipped in.

A solo guitar take on Alec Wilder's While We're Young was delightful but oh how I longed for more than the mere 2 mins plus that it deserved. Nevertheless, although a small mercy, I was duly thankful.

Some fine solos from the horns make this an album to check out and not just by guitarists - Lance

Available tomorrow (Sept. 16). PROMO.

S.O.S; Four on Six; Far Wes; Cariba; Jingles; Mr. Walker; Fried Pies; While We're Young; Twisted Blues; West Coast Blues.
