This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: Ural Thomas & the Pain @ Gosforth Civic Theatre (Thursday 8)

Born in Meraux, Louisiana, long-since resident in Portland, Oregon, soul singer Ural Thomas has enjoyed two distinct careers as an on-stage public performer. During the 1950s and 1960s Thomas worked with or opened the show for some of the biggest names out there...James Brown, Etta James, Stevie Wonder. A measure of chart success didn't dissuade Thomas from eschewing the limelight and for thirty years and more he effectively dropped off the radar.

Now, thanks to soul DJ and drummer Scott Magee's friendship with the octogenarian soul survivor, Thomas is once again recording and touring widely. Ural Thomas and the Pain will be in concert on Thursday (September 8) at Gosforth Civic Theatre. Advance tickets cost £21.00., doors at 7:30, the Jumpin' Hot Club promotion will include a DJ set by Smoove (of Smoove and Turrell fame). BOOK HERE. Russell
