This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Remembering George Wein's JVC NYC Jazz Festival 2006

Impresario George Wein presented some of the biggest names in jazz at Newport, Rhode Island, NYC, at Ally Pally in London and, amazingly, in association with Andy Hudson, at the never-to-be-forgotten, star-studded Newport/Cleveland Jazz Festival held at Ayresome Park which was then the home of Middlesbrough football club. Leafing through the pages of NYC's Village Voice newspaper (May 17-23, 2006), the line-up for the 2006 JVC New York Jazz Festival reads like the 'Boro event did - a who's who of the jazz world (see photo). 

Some are no longer with us (Ornette Coleman, Roy Hargrove, Paul Motian, Etta James, Dave Brubeck), others are alive and well, performing across the globe...The Bad Plus, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra (every Monday night at the Village Vanguard on 7th Ave, two shows at 8:00 & 10:00pm - book now!), Herbie Hancock, Brad Mehldau (on Sky Arts, tomorrow, Sunday 11, 6:50pm), Ralph Towner, Charles Lloyd, Zakir Hussain. Brad Mehldau won't be on Sky Arts this evening (Sun 11), the programme was broadcast last week (Sun 4). Doh!
