This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Jazz Gig of the Year - 2021

There were several gigs this year that really impressed …blew me away…as they say…

The Alison Rayner Quintet gig at The Globe…..to name only four of dozens.

Along with several happy and sociable afternoons and nights at The Exchange and Cullercoats Crescent Club, these gigs show that jazz is still commanding an audience…sometimes more “select” than others… but nevertheless….

However, it has to be said that this audience…us…are, in the main, all of a certain age…

Therefore my gig of the year has to be Knats at Hoochie Coochie …..Lance reviewed the band and the music at the time but my review is of the audience!

They came…they whooped …they clapped….they danced and had a great old time….Average age maybe 20!….yes 20!…and that’s taking into account us old’uns.
It’s alive and it’s well…there’s hope for us yet!…don’t panic Mr Mainwaring! Sylvia

Mine was most definitely Joe Webb at the Lit and Phil not only because he is such a talented player but it was my first live gig after spending lockdown viewing streamed gigs which just are not a patch on live not only for the fans but also the artists . I cannot comprehend how the artists must have felt playing song after song with no cheering and applause so sad.
