Duncan, who describes herself on Instagram as: pianist, singer, composer, songwriter, producer, arranger, aunt, godmother, animal lover and laurel canyon dweller (sic), has produced an album of four extended originals and a reworking of Roxanne (by you know who) that make for an interesting, often compelling set.
The opening He's Not Quite You, like Cole Porter's It's Alright With me, is about making do with second best in a love affair. Apart from Duncan's emotional vocal, the highlight is Mancini's solo on vibes that brings the track to a close.
Elijah has an enigmatical (at least to me!) lyric that rounds off with blistering tenor from Buckingham.
Gemini - an instrumental - opens with some mind blowing flute/clarinet exchanges. Duncan's piano chipping in and more vibes from Mancini.
Home at Last is a masterclass in contemporary lyric writing, emotional vocalising, rich harmonies from piano and virtuosic flute playing - story well told in both words and music.
Roxanne is somewhat different to the original version by The Police. Jazzier, earthier, with vibes, flute and clarinet wailing collectively behind the vocal hysteria approaching stoppage time. Quite a breathtaking finish to an album that never fails to hold your attention - Lance.
