This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Prudhoe Community Band @ Central Station - Dec 11

At this time of year Central Station hosts all manner of Covid-secure parties, sorry, 'gatherings'. Saturday morning, bright and early, the sound of brass and woodwind instruments tuning up could mean only one thing, Dave Hignett was assembling one of his many community ensembles, ready to play a few tunes to entertain the many travellers arriving at or departing from Newcastle.

The Prudhoe Community Band, large in number, big on enthusiasm, kicked off with Three Lions. Altogether now...it's coming home, it's coming, football's coming home...Several familiar faces were in the ranks, Santa hats proliferated, MD Higgnett opting for a fetching set of reindeer antlers. The train arriving at platform 4...Quick let's go!
