Claire Martin (vocals); Nikki Iles (piano); Steve Watts (bass); Matt Home (drums)
A very enjoyable re-stream of an EFG London Jazz Festival gig from the 606 featuring the never less than tremendous Claire Martin. With the always wonderful Nikki Iles on piano and the solid support of Watts and Home the programme concentrated on the work of Bill Evans and Tony Bennett which is always a fertile pasture to plough.
An opening trio number set the mood. A mood that exuded class. I missed the title as, almost simultaneously, the radio, which was crackling away in the background, suggested that Newcastle had taken the lead against Man U!
It was true but faded into insignificance when Claire took to the stage to sing I'm Lucky to be me. She looked good and sounded good. Nikki played a lovely intro to Who Can I Turn To? and Claire picked it up making it her own.
It Might as Well be Spring was followed by Some Other Time by which time the football was forgotten. Make Someone Happy, Old Man Sorrow and When in Rome rounded off a delightful hour by four of the very best. Lance.
