This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Film review: Sing as You Swing (TPTV, Dec. 6)

From 1937, Sing as You Swing (dir. Redd Davis) popped up this morning on Talking Pictures TV. Described as a 'quota quickie', ie a B-movie, it wouldn't have merited a second glance except for the cast listing of Nat Gonella and the Mills Brothers (pictured right). The opening sequence featured Gonella and his Georgians playing a hotter than hot take of Sing as You Swing. 

A terrific start. The Mills Brothers followed singing (In My) Solitude. From there it was down hill all the way, definitely B-movie stuff, save for Mantovani (pictured left) and his orchestra blazing away on Dark Eyes. 

One potentially worthwhile thing came of this early morning trip to the flicks. Talking Pictures TV Encore is a new(ish) free service enabling the viewer to access hundreds of films courtesy of Talking Pictures TV.
