Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Ya Like Jazz? Ella and Friends - April 11

(Screenshot by Russell)
Ella Hohnen-Ford (vocals); Miles Mindlin (guitar); Noah Stoneman (piano); Will Sach (double bass)

When You Wish Upon a Star opened Ella's weekly Sunday evening live stream. Familiar faces joined the recent Royal Academy of Music graduate, pianist Noah Stoneman, heard on many a Kansas Smitty's session, likewise bassist Will Sach, together with a new name, Miles Mindlin playing guitar, yet another  RAM student who has already gigged at Ronnie's and the Soho Pizza Express and he occupies the guitar chair in NYJO.

Ella sang There's a Small Hotel accompanied by Miles, two musicians at the start of their careers yet so very accomplished. Having streamed her Ya Like Jazz? sessions for six or seven weeks, Ella is steadily building an audience. The Man I Love sung to Noah's piano accompaniment, You're Getting to be a Habit swung, Ella's sense of time simply amazing. Harold Arlen's Ill Wind from 1934, popularised by Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra, superb, Ella scatting on Just You, Just Me with a blinding solo from Miles. How do they do it?!

Violets for Your Furs as recorded by Frank Sinatra with the Tommy Dorsey OrchestraElla's repertoire is exemplary. One more tune before Ella and the boys get to their sticky toffee pudding, Easy Living, simply brilliant, immaculate instrumental support to the fabulous Ella Hohnen-Ford. More next week on YouTube at 7:30. Unmissable.
