Ten 10" Albums I still play (occasionally). 6: Jazz Today - Operation Jam Session

National Service, RAF Manby, 1957. A fellow conscript, Dave Yeldham from Sheffield (anybody in Sheffield remember Dave? Is he still around?), brought in this Jazz Today album. I was blown apart, this was fantastic! I think I bought it from him with my life-savings which, at the time was probably about ten bob - or maybe I just bought him a pint, can't remember, it was a long time ago.

However, the album, the sleeve now tattered and torn, is one I still play - probably more frequently than any of the others in this series.

It's, in a sense, like an opera or a symphony building up to a grand finale.

Side 1, Blues in Threes has the three in question - Bertie King, Bruce Turner and Joe Harriott blowing alto (maybe Johnny Dankworth was on the subs bench!) - with Dill Jones, Keith Christie and Kenny Baker bringing the movement to a close with all the horns riffing. If this has had been it then I'd have been happy although maybe not yet prepared to part with my life-savings.

Side 2. A ballad medley. Boring you might think but, boring never entertained this equation! Just look at the cast and their instrumental arias!

Jimmy Skidmore (tenor sax) On the Alamo; Cedric West (guitar) What's New?; Keith Christie (trombone) Makin' Whoopee; Dill Jones (piano) How Long Has This Been Going on?; Harry Klein (baritone sax) Sweet and Lovely followed by "The Grand Amen" Kenny Baker (trumpet) blowing I'm Beginning to See the Light! This was the moment when, if my life-savings hadn't been enough, I'd have sold my grandmother into white slavery! That last chorus is just about as good as anything  I've ever heard from Bach to Basie.

PPS: I find that I actually waxed eloquent about this album back in 2016!
