The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Sunday Night Jazz @ The Globe: Mark Williams Makeshift Trio - April 11

Anyone who felt short-changed that Alice Grace couldn't make it were soon saying "Alice who?" when Mark opened up with Monk's Let's Cool it, a tune that, to my ears, sounded remarkably like the composer's Nica's Dream. Alice, from her sickbed, commented on how good the band sounded.

Mark, notoriously self-effacing, designated the announcing duties to Paul Grainger who explained that, as he wasn't the trio's regular bass player [Paul Susans], tonight's band was the Mark Williams Makeshift Trio.

Makeshift, maybe, but then, isn't that what jazz is all about? The ever changing permutations that make for an alternative look at a familiar set.

It wasn't the most populated stream of the Jazz Co-op's fantastic Sunday night sessions but one of the sidebar pundits did describe it as the best yet! Maybe, it was certainly in the frame.

Listening last night to Jim Mullen was a knockout and yet, tonight, Mark proved that he too is up there in that league! 

Russ Morgan was merely fantastic which is his norm and Paul Grainger is simply Mr Dependable. You want the job done to Check-a-Trade standards? look no further.
