This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Pete Malinverni Trio live streaming from Small's, NYC - April 9

Friday night at 183 West 10th Street with another fine pianist, Pete Malinverni, entertaining Small's online gathering. The hour would include several Leonard Bernstein numbers, original compositions and a tip of the hat to two of the towering figures in jazz. 
Malinverni described Spike Wilner's basement venue as: The living room of jazz. Sitting comfortably? New York, New York! A great way to open the set. Evidently, Mr Malinverni is a fan of Leonard Bernstein as an original piece, Simple Song, based on Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, followed on from Some Other Time from On the Town. 

Our affable pianist had the good fortune to be working in the company of Ugonna Okegwo and Jeff Hamilton. What's more, Malinverni announced they would be going into the Van Gelder studios on Monday to record an album. That'll be another CD for review! Jeff Hamilton opened up on the set closer, a tribute to Duke and Trane, with Take the Coltrane. It had been an hour of top class jazz. Mr Malinverni is another name to catch live, as and when...
