Bebop Spoken There

Jools Holland (on his 2026 spring/summer tour): ''With the mighty [R&B] Orchestra, our wonderful boogie woogie singers, and the brilliant Joe Webb opening the shows [including Darlington Hippodrome, June 19], we're in for some very special evenings of music.'' The Northern Echo February 5, 2026

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review (sort of): Kamasi Washington - The Choice

Kamasi Washington (tenor sax)+ 16 others, a 27 piece orchestra and 13 member choir.

One way to pass a wind blasted Bank Holiday is to read the Wikipedia entries on your favourite musicians. Whilst reading the Kamasi Washington discography I saw a reference to The Choice, a five track EP with an accompanying date of 2018. Not recognising the recording I looked it up on Amazon.co.uk and saw no mention of it there. Nothing on Amazon.com either. Following the Wikipedia link for The Choice I found out that I already had it, I just didn’t know it.

At this point I should apologise in advance if everybody already knew this and I’m the only one who didn’t until today. The Choice is, in fact, an extra disc hidden in the middle of Heaven and Earth, Washington’s 2018 album. Examining my CD copy of the album, I saw perforations down one side of the central section when the cover was fully opened out. Gently cutting through these perforations with a kitchen knife, (please see photograph of reconstruction) gives access to the hidden disc.

The Choice is an album length collection (38 minutes plus) and has the full battalion of musicians that appear elsewhere on Heaven and Earth. For the avoidance of doubt, these are completed pieces of music not demos or false starts. Vinyl versions also contain The Choice as an extra fifth disc. It is not clear from the Wikipedia entry and associated references, most of which date to 2018, whether or not the extra disc is available with every physical copy of the album or just came with early editions. It is not included as part of the album download but is still available from the usual streaming services.

It’s not often that I encourage people to set about their record collections with a carving knife, but this time, it’s worth the effort.
