This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Alexia Gardner in Manhattan and Newcastle


Pianist Alan Law has hepped me up to an exciting new singer on the Newcastle scene - Alexia Gardner. 

Alexia has been around the London scene for several years and appeared on a compilation album produced by pianist, composer, arranger, bandleader and theatrical producer of jazz-inspired shows, Alex Webb. On the Copasetic Foundation Alexia sang Call Me Lucky which was also the title track. Others on the album were: Vimala Rowe, China Moses, Ayanna Witter-Johnson, David McAlmont, Sandra Nkake, Alexander Stewart, Cherise Coryna, Allan Harris, Jo Harrop and Liane Carroll. Fast company indeed!

Since then she has recorded albums in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Switzerland and elsewhere.

Now living in Morpeth, the Birmingham born, British/Jamaican singer recently turned up at 4B's Sunday afternoon gig down at the Ticket Office on Whitley Bay station and made a big impression.

On Saturday, Sept. 21 the charismatic singer is due to appear at the Prohibition Bar on Pink Lane in Newcastle along with Alan Law and Jude Murphy. I'm told it's likely to be 'outrageously good!'

Thank you Alan Law and Bebop Spoken here! Prohibition Bar
was a runaway success! It lead us to swinjging jazz shows at The
Black Swan and then on to The Globe. Valentines Day will find us
at the cozy White Room and Music Bar in Stanley, Durham.
