Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Paul Edis: Lockdown Live #13 - June 12

Paul Edis (piano/vocals).

Start off each day with a song seems to be Paul's current modus operandi. This week it was Just Friends followed by a Kenny Wheeler number, Everybody's Song But my Own, which, despite the title, was a non-vocal delight.

Koto Song, by Brubeck caught the mood of the composer's intentions - this was as Japanese as Sushi and much tastier.

Tony Eales chipped in with a request as he invariably does. This week it was for Things Ain't What They Used to be - sure ain't!

Francis Tulip placed an order for April in Paris which was duly delivered complete with a quote from I'll Remember April - it was a popular month with songwriters!

A couple of Paul originals - I Wish I Was a Monk and  Will o' the Wisp

Moonglow reminded me to dig out my Moonlight Sinatra album. By coincidence, the film Picnic was on TV later and it featured Moonglow as part of the theme tune.

Jitterbug Waltz from the pen of Fats was given suitably reverential treatment and Blame it on my Youth is high up on my list of favourite ballads and the quote from Young at Heart did no damage at all.

The show closed with a request from Tony Roberts for Dolphin Dance.

Another fantastic Friday - roll on next week!
