Bebop Spoken There

Kurt Elling: ''There's something to learn from every musician you play with''. (DownBeat, December 2024).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Dulcie May Moreno: Livestream - June 5

Dulcie May Moreno (vocals); Stephen Bridgland (guitar/harmonica)

I'd been eagerly awaiting this one ever since Dulcie announced it earlier in the week. However, things didn't go entirely to plan and, to be honest, they went pear-shaped!

This, I hasten to add, had nothing to do with Dulcie's singing, but rather the vagaries of the internet and Facebook in particular.

Her connection was down - no doubt getting the usual message about contacting your server etc. - so it was a late start. Another hiccup midway through caused more delay until our multi-tasking songstress changed a lead and we were back in business - or were we?

Well we were (ish) more picture freezing until, long before the song had ended, I gave up which was truly mortifying as when the going was good it was amazingly good as indeed Dulcie and Stephen (who was heard but not seen) invariably are.

Because of my frustration, I didn't note everything down - how can you when you're attacking your PC with a (virtual) hammer?

Comes Love was languorous, slow and relaxed.

Perdido, faster with a Latin feel the visual enhanced by Dulcie's lovely smile and the fan she was decorously waving.

Peel Me a Grape - sensuous and seductive.

An original - Put your Smart Suit On - loved it but then a long intermission followed whilst Dulcie pressed buttons and fiddled about with things before a change of cable got her back up and running.

Get Out of Town was worth staying in town for as was the bluesy number that followed.

Moanin' often shows up on a Dulcie gig and a lot of people would be moaning if it didn't. Well, I for one was moaning as this was when Facebook decided to put the boot in. It stopped and started, froze and thawed and behaved in a most unsociable media way so, sadly, I left.

Apologies Dulcie, you and Stephen were great but, it seems as though Facebook and I don't always get along...

Catch you again soon I hope.
Lance
