Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Adrian Cox's Sunday Service - June 28

Adrian Cox (clarinet, vocals)

An hour of requests this week beginning with East Coast Trot. Sid, a one time roadie for the likes of Kenny Ball and Max Collie, requested Bechet's Passport to Paradise and our preacher, the Rev. Adrian Cox, continued with more Bechet as in his duo recording with Mezz Mezzrow of Breathless Blues. A matter of minutes into this week's live stream and that was three tunes done with many more to follow.

As this session was devoted to requests our host sang something he probably wouldn't normally have in his set list...Cole Porter's I Get a Kick Out of You. Excellent timing, phrasing and the clincher...snapping fingers! Mabel's Dream (referencing clarinetist Ian Wheeler's take on the number that was played by King Oliver's band and many others), an original co-written with pianist Joe Webb titled Sweet, a marvellous story of Cox making a trip to NYC to work with Wynton Marsalis at Lincoln Center (Tony Bennett was in the audience!), hearing Paquito D'Rivera perform etc., etc., then on with the music which included Hiawatha Rag and a tune Cox said he'd always liked singing, When You're Smiling

And that was just about it for another week save for a plug for what promises to be a special live stream event late on Sunday evening, July 19. At something like half past midnight Cox will be teaming up with Joe Webb to play a set as part of Dizzy's Club's series of online gigs. One for the diary! And to finish, a tune Cox played as an encore when he toured his Edmund Hall show, Ed's Blues.
