This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Streaming Rico 'n' Denny - June 5

Tonight's Rico's Popup Louis got off to a stuttering, false start, however, our host quickly sorted the problem. A request to begin...West End Blues no less! Another false start. Let's do it again, said Rico. This time accompanied by Denny Ilett's rhythm guitar. Mr Tomasso played trumpet, naturally enough, but, surprise, surprise, trombone too (!) with Ilett contributing a tasty, bluesy solo and - wow! - the thrill of Rico nailing Armstrong's famous trumpet part. Ballin' the Jack dating from 1913 (composer Chris Smith) heard Rico using a plunger mute on his '33 Armstrong balanced-action horn. Things were going well...

Things were going well...picture freeze...arrrgh! A Kiss to Build a Dream On by way of a request from a fan in Newcastle upon Tyne restored order. Denny's Django-like intro, Rico's lyrical trumpet and, cradling his instrument, a vocal chorus. A final number, as Rico consumed some more of his 24-bottle present from a loyal lockdown supporter, Lew Pollack's hot That' a Plenty. As Denny tore into his solo Rico said: Hmmm. Tonight's session ended with a typically hot trumpet flourish from Rico. As the man said: See you tomorrow night!
