This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Streaming Rico 'n' Brian - June 12

Another week, another in Rico Tomasso's Popup Louis series of live stream gigs. This evening Rico's tip jar-sharing buddy was none other than one of Scotland's finest, pianist Brian Kellock.

A meeting of minds this week...Tomasso and Kellock and Armstrong and Ellington. Duke's Black Butterfly to start. Rico revealed he first met Brian in Edinburgh, they went on to play duo gigs together and this evening's lockdown duo continued with another Louis-Duke recording, Duke's I'm Just a Lucky So and So. The sound of Brian's piano playing caught the ear of fellow Scot, and sometime Newcastle Black Swan jammer, Mr Martin Waugh with MW commenting Brian's sound was instantly recognisable. 


For Rico's mother - Someday Sweetheart with Brian's piano introduction setting up our host's fine trumpet playing. Mrs T no doubt approved, not least as the ending was one that Tomasso Snr perfected on clarinet!

One more number with this wonderful piano player, said Rico. Glancing at on-screen comments, a plug for the tip jar and tomorrow night's Dress Up Saturday set, then our duo took it out with Hoagy's Jubilee. Did Kellock steal the show with some tremendous playing on this one? Yeah, just about!
