This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Freddy Cole (1931 - 2020)

The news has broken of the death of pianist/vocalist Freddy Cole on Saturday (June 27) in Atlanta, GA. his adopted home for the past 48 years.

Brother to the late legendary Nat "King" Cole, Freddy Cole chose not to live in reflected glory but paved his own way to international success.

Daryl Sherman's touching words on Facebook are a fitting epitaph - "Heaven is a better place with you in it."

Freddy Cole was 88, may he Rest In Peace.

Sad news. Not too long ago I bought a CD 'Secret Ellington' - some archive material of Duke's that had come to light and had been specially arranged for the recording by, among others, the late guitarist Joe Beck. It's a very good CD and one of the several artists featured was Freddy Cole. One song in particular stood out for me - a song 'They Say' which Freddy sang. A challenging song and one that would be tricky to sing in a meaningful way but he sang it in such a convincing and moving manner, it made me appreciate just what a great musician he was. As a result of that encounter I looked up his background, Juilliard etc. and realised he was a top rank jazz musician both in his piano playing and singing.
