Sam Leak (piano)
As these lockdown sessions continue it becomes obvious just how important the backroom boys/girls at gigs and recording sessions are. Tonight being a typical example. Scheduled for 7:00pm it kicked off at 8:00pm.
7:00pm was doors I was told. Doors? What (choose your adjective carefully here) friggin' doors? this was a virtual online session from Sam's music room. The punters weren't being let in an hour early so they could buy his booze!
So, after checking out other streams, I drifted back to Sam's place and he began to play. It was fine, I enjoyed the music but, unfortunately, the mic was off so no words. Now this again would be okay if the player was a hands-on sock it to you performer but Sam isn't so I'd have liked to have known more about his compositions - their inspiration etc. but, not being a lip-reader this was denied me.
Towards the end, the mic became live although Sam's words weren't always decipherable.
The playing was a revelation - the originals explorative and full of emotion. The later standards swung and convinced me that my modest entrance fee was worth it. Sorry I didn't make his appearance at The Globe last month.

PS: A brief Q & A at the end gave a further insight to the man and his music.

Apologies for the talking technical hitch for the first couple of pieces, Sam sorted that as soon as he realised. As for start time, it clearly states on the Jazz Coop website and Facebook page that gig starts at 8pm. The private FB group had an opening time of 7pm, because that was after the sound check.
That explains it all!
