The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review: Henry Robinett Quartet - Jazz Standards Volume 1

Henry Robinett (guitar); Joe Gilman (piano); Chris Symer (bass); Michael Stephans (drums).

The Henry Robinett Quartet recorded these 10 tracks 20 years ago and they then lay dormant for 19 years. The guitarist has no recollection of why they stayed on the shelf for almost a couple of decades but, when he eventually got around to listening to them again he was pleasantly surprised at how good they sounded.  This wasn't a statement made with a lack of modesty - he was merely quoting a fact, a fact that I wholeheartedly concur with.


He swings along with the fluency of say, Kessel, Ellis or Pass aided and abetted by a solid rhythm section. Guitar and piano complement each other perfectly and avoid any dissonant chordal clashes. Gilman is a punchy soloist who picks up Robinett's lines seamlessly creating one long solo out of two shorter ones.

Bass and drums allow no flagging up front, they drive  the other two like jockeys in a photo finish. 

Guitar albums don't come any better than this - and nor do piano albums!
Release date is May 1 with a Volume 2 scheduled to follow as well as newly recorded Volumes 3 and 4 from 2019.
