Bebop Spoken There

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

North Shields Jazz Club

Russell uncovered this piece of memorabilia and wonders if any of our older, more traditionally inclined, readers can tell us about North Shields Jazz Club.

I have vague recollections of Hughie Aitchison doing a gig there with a band.

The Blackhouse Ragtime Orchestra - was that a band John Sample was part of?

I think, with Pastor Wappat now passed on, it may be left to Dave Kerr to provide further details.

I remember the gigs that the Savannah Syncopators played for Frank Wappatt They were in a church in North Shields all the pews had been taken out and replaced by tables and chairs. Also, a bar was added.

Frank always had ambitious ideas that floundered.

The club did not last long as most of the audience came from his congregation who had little interest in the music. Frank also had a long running programme on BBC Radio Newcastle playing records mostly of British dance bands from the 1930's. He also organised a recording session with The Savannah Syncopators in the church and recorded half a dozen tunes and regularly played them on his programme.

Yes, John Sample was co leader and trumpet player with the Black House Ragtime Band

I don't recall Frank Wappat having a jazz club in North Shields but I do remember him trying to get bands to play in
the Byker Mission. I did one gig with the Vieux Carre. No money in it just free beer (probably why I have only vague recollections) and it never took off.
