This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Echoes of New Orleans with Colin Hancock

One week today (Friday November 1) in a brief ceremony at the Village Hotel a young musician will be presented with a Young Talent Award. The 2019 edition of Mike Durham's International Classic Jazz Party will, for the first time, present an award to an emerging, young musician dedicated to performing and promoting the music of the 'classic jazz' era. 

The recipient of the award in its inaugural year is Colin Hancock. The cornetist from Buda, Texas is currently tearing it up on the New York jazz scene and will be flying into Newcastle to accept the award and, as a bonus, participate in Michael McQuaid's Friday afternoon set New Orleans Echoes. Reports from America suggest Colin, at the tender age of 23, is set for stardom.  Some years ago, the then little known, Cécile McLorin Salvant made a huge impact at the Whitley Bay event and look at her now - a superstar gracing the world's most prestigious concert halls! 

At 2:30pm on Friday Colin will share the stand with Michael McQuaid, New York trumpeter Mike Davis, fellow Jazz Party debutant Dave Bock, trombone, and the Euro-Brit contingent of Lars Frank, reeds, Morten Gunnar-Larsen, piano, Félix Hunot, banjo and guitar, tuba and string bass favourite Malcolm Sked and, sitting ram-rod straight behind the traps, Nick Ward.
