This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Sunday Jazz @ Middlesbrough Town Hall, early evening session - October 27

In between the concerts in the Main Hall, we had two very satisfying sets in the Fire Station.

Hand to Mouth celebrates the recordings made back in the 1970’s by Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass and, in Bradley and Lindsay, they could have no better duo to bring that music back to life.

Cool and laid back, they dealt up exquisite versions of The Very Thought of You; ‘Tis Autumn; I Ain’t Got Nothing But the Blues; One Note Samba with an amazing voice/ guitar take on the middle 8; In My Solitude; I Love Being Here With You and Some Other Time – I hope so!

Abbie Finn Trio: Abbie Finn (drums); Harry Keeble (tenor sax); Paul Grainger (bass).

After a multi-directional intro emerged Caravan. Keeble was fully charged with a solo that took us from one end of the Sahara to the other and back again. This guy has it all, as of course we already knew from his appearances in local jams. He can blow and so can leader Abbie play drums who kept the train moving with an explosive solo. Women can make music? – You betcha!

Swim, a composition by Paul Grainger, not surprisingly, featured the bass man and Nothing Personal, a tune associated with Michael Brecker featured the man who, tonight, was Michael Brecker until the next number when he was Joe Henderson on Recorda Me.

The clock was ticking down but we still had time for Seven Steps to Heaven and Dexter Gordon’s Cheese Cake. “Third time I’ve heard that number this weekend” remarked Tony Eales referring to Vasi’s sessions reviewed by Russell.
It’s been a good weekend for tenor players and there’s more to come.
