influences such as Reid Anderson, Todd Sickafoose - whoever they are - along with Charlie Haden (I know who he is!) but, overall, I get the feeling that the omnipresent figure is Mingus. Which is no bad thing.
The writing seems to draw a lot on Mingus' harmonies although I'm sure Charlie Haden's influence is also well felt.
Solid soloing, Blake's tenor sounds like a saxophone should sound whilst Knuffke is lyrical, unlike so many of the newer players, and the two form a beautiful frontline. Cardenas is an equally impressive soloist whilst leader, bassist, composer, Cordez holds it all together with some assists from Allison Miller.
The album is released on February 16 with a launch concert 3 days later at the Wardrobe Theatre, Bristol, maybe they'll visit Newcastle.
Maybe they won't, so buying the CD is the next best option.
And it's not a bad option at all!
