I'm not a native New Yorker but that's only because of a few thousand miles of ocean that lie 'twixt the UK and the USA.
A similar state of affairs with Elektrojazz. Trombonist Larson, born in Sweden, lives in Copenhagen as do his band colleagues.
The aim of their visit to Manhattan was to capture the pulse, feel and smell of the city. They went around Manhattan doing on-location recordings of street musicians, people and places. They even had a subway train doubling as a horn section!
The star, apart from the city itself, is Larson one of the most engaging trombonists I've heard in many a long year. Jimmy Knepper with Mingus springs to mind. The pathos of Midtown March is expressed with a sad eloquence by Cary Goldberg. The mood of his spoken words matched by Larson's plaintive cries and comments.
Michael Stephenson's vocals are smooth as silk. Mr. Reeds less so but more adventurous - takes more chances. The beatbox and the subway sounds add to the ambiance.
Until today I'd only been to New York once.
Now I've been twice!
