This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Album review: Jed Levy Phil Robson Quartet (Livia Records)

The second album in just over a year from New York tenor player Levy. His previous album, Faces and Places was favourably reviewed HERE last May and the good news is that The Unpredictability of the Sea, whilst totally different, is batting in the same league.

For this latest album Levy teams up with UK guitarist Phil Robson, a musical partnership that began when Robson himself was living in NYC where they soon became an integral part of  that city's jazz scene.

Since then Robson has relocated to Ireland although the actual it was actually recorded at My Secret Place, Gatto's studio in Rome. Jazz really has become well and truly global.

Levy has a good sound on tenor, his tone slots effectively in between west coast cool and east coast hard bop delivered with a technique to match the masters of both schools. Phil Robson has been featured within these hallowed pages many times with, among others, the Partisans or his partner, singer Christine Tobin. I also recall hearing him on a memorable occasion with Ross Stanley at Scarborough where Alan Barnes introduced him as "One of the best guitarists in the world"- nobody disagreed.

Ten original compositions, five each by the two leaders, and aided and abetted by  in demand bassist Hodgson and the multi-faceted Gatto on drums and studio set up all adding up to an album that's well worth checking out.

Next month sees the album toured in Ireland (May 11 - 17) followed by a London date at the 606 on May 20 and a trip to Nottingham's Bonington Theatre the day after (May 21). Lance
