Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: Ralph Towner - My Foolish Heart

Ralph Towner (classical guitar/12 string guitar)
(Review by Lance).
It's never a bad idea to slot in a standard amongst a program of originals. It tells the prospective buyer about the player's mindset and, in My Foolish Heart, he chose wisely. A beautiful tune irrespective of who performs it but, the version by the Bill Evans Trio that inspired Towner is on a par with any instrumental and better than most.

Having said that, Towner's originals lose nothing by comparision. His gentle, probing style, is compelling and far removed from most things that come out of the ECM stable.
Many years ago I discovered Charlie Byrd's Blues For Night People and, until about ten minutes ago, that album was my favourite classical guitar jazz album. Maybe it still is but it's a close call and possibly, after a few listenings, this one could edge it.
The only downside and I doubt if everyone will see it as a downside, is a couple of numbers (Clarion Call & Biding Time) on the 12 stringer. To me, the 12 string isn't a jazz instrument. Great for folk and blues but I don't think it cuts it on an album where the emphasis is on the classical guitar. However, if we are having a couple of tracks on 12 string guitar then, I guess, Towner does it as good as anyone.
Delightful.
Lance.
Available now on ECM.
