Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

International Jazz Artists play The Jazz Cafe Friday April 15: Free Admission

The Jazz Café team are delighted to announce a free admission duo performance downstairs in The Café on the Friday of the Sage International Jazz Festival weekend  in association with Gateshead International Jazz Festival and Jazz North East.
Friday, April 15, at 9.00pm – Michel Reis (piano) and Stefan Karl Schmid (tenor & soprano saxophones and clarinet) – Admission Free.
Michel Reis and Stefan Karl Schmid are one-half of the Michel Reis Quartet which is on Tyneside at this time to appear in concert in a double bill with John Law’s New Congregation in the Gateshead International Jazz Festival at Sage Gateshead at 2.30pm on Saturday, April 16.
Luxembourg – born Michel Reis, having completed his music studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston and at the New England Conservatory, bases himself partly in New York and partly in his home country. In Europe, he leads three bands. In the Quartet which comes to Gateshead he is joined by three outstanding players from Germany and of this group he writes that he “always strives to build atmospheres which go deep into lyrical dimensions, yet having still the full rhythmic energy of a modern jazz group, where composition and spontaneous improvisation take the listeners on an emotional journey.” We might expect something of this approach to inform his duo performance with Stefan Karl Schmid.
Michel Reis has made one previous appearance in Newcastle with his Luxembourg trio, Reis/ Demuth/Wiltgen, an unforgettable one in this writer’s opinion. His third group, The Paris Quartet, is made up entirely of stellar French jazz musicians and focuses on the music of Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy arranged for jazz quartet by Reis.
Michel Reis is a Steinway Artist. “Michel Reis is a very exceptional pianist and composer.” Joe Lovano.
