Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD/Download Review: Paul Taylor - Cusps.

Paul Taylor (pno).
(Review by Lance).
An original voice both as a composer and pianist. Those who caught Taylor's solo set on the Concourse at last week's GIJF will want to hear his subtle, deep, meaningful explorations away from the sometimes extraneous and disturbing sounds that a solo pianist is subjected to in such a setting.
No such problem here, in your den! Taylor demands and gets the listener's undivided attention. Quite an amazing and creative player, he appears to stride the genres.
If he wore tails and had a lady by his side turning the pages he'd be a classical pianist. No page-turner so he's a jazz pianist or maybe even a jazzical pianist, certainly an improviser who recognises the values of lyricism and harmony. It doesn't matter how you categorise him, listening to this delightful album it's irrelevant. If you're into Chopin, Liszt or Keith Jarrett, you'll also be into Paul Taylor and just in case you think Paul is some aloof, ivory tower, composer - catch him with his brother's band - Simon Taylor and the Sundowners!
