Bebop Spoken There

John McLaughlin: ''It was then that Coltrane came along and single-handedly brought this dimension of spirituality into jazz. It was a pivotal experience to me.'' (DownBeat September, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

RIP Herbie Goins

R 'n' B, Soul singer Herbie Goins passed away on October 27. Although American born he spent most of his working musical life in Europe and the UK in particular. He brought his distinctive vocals to the bands of Eric Delaney, Chris Barber and Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated before forming The Nightimers a band that included, at various times, Mike Carr and Harry Beckett. I recall the band playing the Club Agogo in Newcastle although I wasn't there myself.
Without doubt one of the legends.
Herbie Goins died in Italy aged 76.
Sadly missed.
Obituary.
Lance.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Nigel Stanger worked with Goins.

That would be when they were both with Alexis Korner's Blues Inc.

I met him at a show a few years back, lovely guy, he was happy to chat. And of course he made one of life's great 45s. R.I.P. Herbie
