Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Zoe Gilby @ Hoochie Coochie November 2.

Zoe Gilby (vcl); Mark Williams (gtr); Andy Champion (bs); Richard Brown (dms).
(Review by Lance/photo courtesy of Ken Drew).
What can I say? The girl just gets better and better! The originals, the covers and the standards are non pareille.
The originals make me wonder how such a good singer can also create such wonderful lyrics? I mean how many lyrics have Frank, Tony or Ella written? Then you think Peggy - Peggy wrote almost as many songs as she sang so no problem there!
The covers were superb. Kate Bush's The Warm Room, heard many times by both Zoe and Kate, was never more evocative than this... my fingers wanted to linger.. great lyric.
And of course, the tribute to my favourite author - The Midnight Bell  - by Patrick Hamilton.
I wonder if Hamilton has any living relatives? Surely they would love to have this as a musical memory of their long gone relative?
I'm on the case!
But, as always, the originals and the covers,  lose out when the Gasbook plays for keeps!
Caravan set the pace. With Richard aboard the camels and the dromedary almost got it but, That Old Black Magic had everyone in it's spell! If NASA knew how fast Zoe could tongue twist these words her next gig would be on Mars (or in some Galactic bar - Mars, bar, get it!). Attractive as a journey into space maybe I guess Zoe would probably remain on Earth for the 2016 Olympics where spouse Andy is odds on favourite for the Arco Bass-playing 128 bar sprint.
Amazing.
Lance.
