Bebop Spoken There

Christian McBride: ''We knew back in the day that Emmet [Cohen] had it.'' (DownBeat July, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

RIP Bobby Gordon

The clarinettist Bobby Gordon has sadly passed away. One of the later breed of musicians keeping classic jazz/swing alive his playing enlivened sessions by Becky Kilgore and others. Michael Steinman has posted an emotive obituary on his Jazz Lives site.
Bobby Gordon died on New Year's Eve.

CD Review: Beautiful Love: Paulinho Garcia

Paulinho Garcia (acoustic guitar and vocals).
(Review by Ann Alex.)
I’d describe this as a romantic easy-listening CD rather than jazz, one for us ladies to play during a candle-lit evening spent with someone we love, and I’m not talking about your dad or your brother!
Fifteen tracks of mostly jazz standards accompanied by skilful but understated guitar, a few tracks sung in Portuguese and Spanish and also a self-penned song Do You Remember Me?  The whole performance is infused with a ‘latin’ feel, tango and bossa nova, from the opening song by Jobin  Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar right through to the last (folk) song,  Casinha Pequenina.

CD Review: Pete Mills - Sweet Shadow

Pete Mills (ten); Pete McCann (gtr); Erik Augis (pno); Martin Wind (bs); Matt Wilson (dms).
Jazz is a never ending voyage of discovery. You become complacent, blasé the old ennui takes over - you've heard it all before and then - Flash! Bang! Alakazam! Pete Mills segues by! From Canada, Toronto of all places. Toronto I ask you? Then you think back and recall that one of the greatest jazz concerts ever took place at Massey Hall in that very city. Bird, Diz, Bud, Mingus, Roach back in 1953. An autograph collected by Mills' father at that concert is reproduced among the album notes and it becomes obvious that the son has jazz genes inherited from his papa.

R.I.P. Boyd Lee Dunlop

We'd all heard of Frankie Dunlop, drummer with Monk for many years, I recall seeing him with Lionel Hampton at Newcastle City Hall - a living legend. But what about his elder brother Boyd Lee Dunlop? I too shook my head. The name meant nothing. That is, until the announcement of his death on December 28 aged 87 when I investigated further..
Boyd gave Frankie his first drum lesson, worked as a labourer in a steelworks whilst playing piano in a club in Buffalo at night, and at 85 made his first CD after someone heard him play in the nursing home where he now lived. It was so successful they recorded him again the following year. How's that for being a late developer?
Rest In Peace.
