The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Album review: Lolivone de la Rosa - Jewels (self-released)

Let's begin with Lolivone de la Rosa: This album represents a myriad of dreams made tangible. Two worlds come together: the folklore I grew up with in Puerto Rico and carry within me and the swing I fell in love with in New York.

Musically, that pretty much sums Jewels up. The mix of Latin melodies, mainly composed or arranged by de la Rosa, and the swing to bop feel of Bird's Segment gel so smoothly it's almost as if an additional sub-genre has been added to the jazz lexicon. Goold's double tempo tenor solo over the balladic Beautiful Friendship and Jensen's trumpet explorations of a distant galaxy on the same tune do nothing to dispel that thought.

A lot of Latin, jazz lovers are going to want this one which was released on June 26. Lance
