The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. EP review: Suzanne Pittson & Bevan Manson - Conversations

Suzanne Pittson (voice); Bevan Manson (piano)*

On Freddie Hubbard's Like a Byrd, Pittson bursts from the blocks like a sprinter about to crack 10 seconds over 100 metres. It's fast and furious, her vocal range of what must surely be four octaves covers the full gamut. Manson has his work cut out to stay in the game. - but stay in the game he does. Quite brilliantly.

After You, a rarely heard Cole Porter number I'd only knew from a Bill Evans album. It's beautiful. Bird's Confirmation offers more scope for vocal pyrotechnics as might be expected. Manson too has a brief chorus or two before Pittson takes it out  in style.

I'm a Fool to Want You, for me, is a song with too deep a Sinatra association both musically and emotionally to take any other version seriously. Having said that, I must confess that if Pittson had got in first (she probably wasn't born!) the situation might well have been reversed.

More Freddie Hubbard to take this five track EP out. However, unlike the previous four, Out of the Hub has the full monty with brass and strings and things orchestral  and lyrics by Pittson's son Evan. Details can be found in the lower graphic. Lance
