The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. The Trumpet Shall Sound....

...the above title is from Handel's oratorio The Messiah and it sprung to my mind last weekend and the days either side of it as being very appropriate. It may no longer apply to a certain   footballer from Argentina but, away from the World Cup, we had a couple of trumpet-slinging expats doing the rounds and taking no prisoners.

Originally from Wallsend Colin Aitchison now leads the band at Ned Kelly's Last Stand in Kowloon, Hong Kong. He annually returns to his roots guesting with the local New Orleans/mainstream bands and venues. His familiarity with the idiom and his vintage vocals a delight to behold. In the photo above he is flanked (l-r) by David Gray and Jim McBriarty.

From further down the coast Mejedi Owusu moved from Norwich via Birmingham and London to Juilliard School in NYC where he is now a central figure on that city's jazz scene. Thanks to guitarist Francis Tulip and the acumen of a local promoter, Mejedi managed to squeeze in five north east gigs leaving listeners gobsmacked at what they were hearing.
