The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Greg Abate Quartet @ the Moor Club, Stockport - July 12

Another night of musical fireworks from the energetic Mr Abate. I arrived at the Moor Club at 7pm an hour before the start time and was  surprised to see Greg already in position and blowing a few tasty licks on his alto sax.The night before, he had been playing at the Swanage Jazz Festival so tonight would be gig no 6 in an extensive UK tour. 

Although many of the tunes featured tonight are familiar ones they are given the Abate treatment which means no rehearsal and changes to tempo etc. will occur at the drop of a hat.  The rhythm section have to be on their toes that's for sure! Greg's flute was utilised on the only Abate original, a 6/8 tune,  On The Road  and also  Corcovado. Both these tunes  sounded good to me and I was wondering if the heatwave had caused the audience turnout to be less than usual.
I was pleased that three Charlie Parker numbers were played and the one I liked best was the ultra-fast  Moose The Mooch which had all partipants working their socks off.  Johnny Hunter took a great solo on the final Bird tune,  Yardbird Suite. Mike Farmer
