A fourth concert in three days. Queen's Hall, Hexham hosts a monthly Sunday afternoon concert series and this afternoon there was hardly a spare seat going. All the way from New York City, trumpeter Mejedi Owusu was in town. What's more, so was guitarist Francis Tulip. Two great musicians, Mejedi and Francis were joined by two other fine musicians, bassist Tommy Fuller and drummer Noah Stone.
Over the course of four days, Mejedi, Francis, Tommy and Noah would dip into the bags of Bird and Trane, Chick Corea, Kenny Dorham, the recently departed Sonny Rollins and others and it was no different here on Beaumont Street, Hexham. Whatever the audience was expecting to hear, no one but no one was disappointed. In a nice touch, the quartet invited Queen's Hall's 'Jazz on Sunday' promoter Joe Steels to join them on a couple of numbers, Joe sparring with fellow guitarist Francis.
Four concerts done, one to go, tomorrow night at Blaydon Jazz Club. Can't wait! Russell
