“When I seek another word for ‘music,’ I never find any other word than ‘Venice.’”
That quote is from none other than German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Long recognized as one of the world’s most romantic cities, Venice has been celebrated in many movies, music, art and other media. It gets yet another accolade in Meet Me in Venice, a marvelously infectious single from the combined pens of musical siblings, Gio Washington-Wright and Nakyshia Lazarre.
More a light
bossa than barcarole, the track is a dreamy, seductive effort delivering
a lovely female voice, a superior Washington-Wright arrangement and Lazarre’s perfect
lyrics. The lush vibe here - and reinforced by the cover - might be called “Classic
Continental,” but without the corn. Perhaps a more apt description is “Mancini
Meets Gilberto.” It’s that good.
The
uncredited Muse vocalist is a smooth siren who, with Biles-like athleticism
swirls through the melody in relaxed style. Lazarre’s fine lyrics are a dagger
that really gets you. The vocal overdubbing on the tune’s bridge is a superb
production touch. The selection offers an elegant acoustic guitar intro (and
later, a brief solo), and a tasty, unobtrusive big band accompaniment. The
production values on the track are outstanding.
Meet Me
in Venice is an all-around grabber of a
recording. Don’t be surprised if, as you listen, you and your dream lover drift
off cozily in a Venetian gondola. Who knows? Old Friedrich might be up there on
the Rialto Bridge humming and digging the scene. Nick Mondello
