This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: Newcastle Jazz Festival - Friday August 18

Two weeks tonight (Friday August 18) the doors to the Black Swan open at seven o'clock. At eight o'clock one of the British jazz scene's brightest young stars will take to the stage. Saxophonist Alex Clarke will be making her third appearance on Tyneside, on this occasion it'll be with her ace quartet: pianist Andrzej Baranek (most recently in Newcastle with Gaz Hughes at the Lit & Phil), brilliant young bassist James Owston (a two-time visitor to the Globe) and one of the leading drummers of his generation, Clark Tracey.

Alex Clarke, a former finalist in the 2020 BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year competition and winner in the 'rising star' category at the 2019 British Jazz Awards, is as busy as any musician you care to name. In demand across the board, working with many of the established 'names', it's easy to forget the saxophonist is a mere twenty-something.
