Ed Kainyek Quartet @ the Railway, Stockport - Feb. 7

Ed selected some interesting tunes to play tonight. Composers included Henry Mancini, Charlie Parker, Wayne Shorter, Lennon/McCartney, Billy Joel, F. Churchill, and Richard Rodgers.  Ed got a great sound on his Yamaha tenor and held my interest throughout the evening.  George King had plenty of solos and he impressed me with his trio feature during the first set - Someday My Prince Will Come.

Tim Franks did a first rate job on both sticks and brushes. Before the gig he told me how much he likes the drumming of Jack DeJohnette  especially his work on the ECM label.  Gavin Barras was a tower of strength in the rhythm section and he has played this venue many times to great acclaim.  


A tune I always like to hear is On a Clear Day and Ed’s version was one of the highlights of the second set. It’s not often you hear Billy Joel’s  New York State of Mind played in a jazz setting but Ed called it and it worked well.


Instead of the usual up tempo flagwaver to finish, Ed decided on a medium tempo My One and Only Love and this concluded a very enjoyable evening of modern jazz.


The next jazz night at the Railway will be Sunday Feb.12 with the Derrick Harris Trio. Mike Farmer
