Malo Mazurié, Jon-Erik Kellso (trumpets); Christoph Hermann (trombone); Claus Jacobi, Michael McQuaid, Mauro Porro (reeds); David Boeddinghaus (piano); Phil Rutherford (tuba); Nicholas D. Ball (drums, vocal).
I was unfamiliar with the Paul Howard Society Serenaders. They only recorded, according to my copy of Jazz Directory Volume 4 (GHI) which, seemingly back in 1952 would have cost me ten shillings. As I was still at school at the time that would have been the equivalent of about five weeks pocket money or, in real terms, a lot of gobstoppers from the nearby tuck shop. So I probably bought it many years later!
However, I digress, The band, led by Jacobi, played ten of 'The Great 15' and it was an impressive sound. I particularly liked the passages that were played, and perfectly synchronised, when the saxes formed a clarinet trio. Everyone soloed including occasional chirps from Tyneside's own boss of the brass basement Phil Rutherford.
My one disappointment was that Jon-Erik Kellso wasn't featured more as, when he was he lived up to my expectations.
I'd loved to have stayed for the evening session but, after the problems of getting there, I didn't want to risk any further hassle getting home - time, tide and public transport wait for no one! Lance
