This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Flying a Kite on An Empty Beach - a new CD from Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra (GIO).

This CD, the group’s 13, celebrates the life of one of GIO’s founding members who was also an unsung hero of the Scottish jazz scene: the magnificent bass player George Lyle. Five tracks, devised by different members of the group, each channel George’s beautiful character and musicianship. From whispering ethereal chants to rollercoasting joyous improvisations, the CD documents a new chapter in one of Europe’s most prolific and engaging large improvising ensembles. 

Critically acclaimed around the world, GIO have been finding new ways to create improvised music as a large ensemble for over 20 years, and this CD sees them merging electromagnetic static, samples and loops with live improvising (Belmont Street) and invoking a Greek chorus during an improvised concerto for two double basses (Impro-tata For GL). A graphic score is ingeniously merged with Thelonious Monk (Another Room), while a reimagining of jazz rhythm references George’s laid-back walking style (Shuffle). There’s also a gorgeous floating, shimmering soundscape that aims to capture an aural embodiment of the essential George Lyle (A Sonic Meditation for George Lyle). 

Drawing the listener into an intimate, kaleidoscopic sonic world of endless possibilities, this CD is not only a captivating listen, but a collective love letter to a much-missed friend who was universally loved in Scotland and around the world by anyone who knew him. 


The New Jazz and Improvised Music Recordings project was established during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, offering a creative output for musicians when live performance opportunities were unavailable and encouraging artist independence. 

Emphasising sustainability for artists and music studios, the ethos of sustainability also carries through the production process by employing a carbon neutral manufacturing plant and distributors, using recycled and biodegradable materials whenever possible.
