This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Sven and Benny - Press release from Simon Wolfe

Ask just about any jazz musician with a long enough memory to name the best film ever made about jazz and the chances are they'll pick a 1976 Swedish movie called "Sven Klang's Combo".

It was shown a couple of times on TV, the last time in the mid-80s, but since then has been virtually unobtainable. I started looking into getting it a UK release when the first lockdown hit in 2020. It had been restored and was showing on a Swedish streaming site but without subtitles. After a series of rebuffs I was delighted when Olivier Stockman of Sands Films offered to take it on. Subtitles have been sourced and the film will be shown on Tuesday 15th November as part of Sands’ London Jazz Festival programme.  Live music before the
screening tbc.

Two days later on Thursday 17th I will be fronting an all-star quintet playing the music of Benny Carter, one of the true giants of jazz.
