This idea was inspired after my evening lullaby when I chose to play a Greg Abate album. This didn't send me to sleep as nocturnal listening often does, instead it kept me awake reminding me of the many times I'd heard Greg playing in and around Newcastle.
This soon became a morning after the night before feeling when I discovered that, even as I type, he's playing in Leicester tonight followed by Liverpool, Cheltenham, Marlow, Sheffield, Wakefield, Portishead and London. There's a few spaces in that itinerary which makes me wonder why some of our local entrepreneurs didn't seize the moment.
In my alphabetical list of favourite alto players, Greg, apart from Alan Barnes with whom he played a memorable gig at the Corner House back in 2012 (my gig of the year), is the only one still with us and we shouldn't let any opportunity to hear, in person, a legend pass us by.
So here's my list: Greg Abate, Cannonball Adderley, Alan Barnes, Sonny Criss, Paul Desmond, Lou Donaldson, Joe Harriott, Peter King, Charlie Parker, Art Pepper, Sonny Stitt, Phil Woods.
I'm sure others will have different lists so let's hear from you - Lance
