This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Gaz Hughes Trio @ the Railway, Stockport - Sept. 11

Tonight’s gig was advertised as the Gaz Hughes Quartet but there were only three musicians involved! However, no one seemed to mind as this turned out to be a well-rehearsed unit with some interesting arrangements of well known standards and some originals. The opening tune was an up-tempo groover entitled Bebopillusions followed by another original number which Gaz named Edith.  Then it was Andrzej featured on Ellington’s wonderful ballad Sophisticated Lady and his version was excellent - as it always is.  

Ed Harrison took many solos throughout the evening and they were all highly melodic. He is a much in demand bass player and it’s always good to see him here at the Railway where he has made countless appearances.


It was hard for me to pick out a highspot from the dozen tunes played but one that I think shows how well Andrzej can get round the rhythm changes is Sonny Rollins' Oleo. This always gets a good response from the Sunday night regulars. I was pleased to see Gaz using a mic to make announcements and also to acknowledge the fact that Ray Ford the jazz loving landlord is doing a great job keeping modern jazz going here twice a week.

            

The next jazz night at the Railway is on Tuesday, Sept 13, with the Paul Hartley Quartet featuring violinist Julian Gregory. Mike Farmer
