Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Steve Oakes Band @ the Railway, Stockport - July 5

(© Jeff Pritchard)
Steve Oakes (guitar); John Dyson (alto/soprano sax); Andrzej Baranek (keys); John Sandham (bass); Tim Franks (drums).

Steve has a residency here on the first Tuesday of each month and usually you will see Ed Kainyek in the line-up but, for reasons undisclosed. his place was taken by a musician who I don’t know much about, reeds player John Dyson. I believe he has a history in jazz education at Leeds Conservatoire and I recall hearing him at a jam session in Manchester  but can’t remember where or when this was. He sounds to me like he has listened a lot to late-period Art Pepper but on soprano he may have been influenced by more contemporary players such as Wayne Shorter.

The tunes that Steve chose tonight were most likely ones that were suited to Dyson’s bebop style but it was an interesting selection. However, I did think  that the overall volume was a shade too loud but that could have been due to my sitting more to the right of my usual position.

John Sandham is another local bass player whom I haven't seen for a while. He's another musician who can be added to the growing list of bassists in this area who can handle a wide variety of jazz styles.

I have written so many times in praise of Andrzej Baranek that I’m running out of superlatives! He likes up-tempo bop tunes like Crazeology but when a ballad is called for like Monk's 'Round Midnight he really gets into the mood of the piece.

Next jazz at the Railway is on July 10 with reeds maestro Frank Griffith's quartet. Unfortunately. I'll miss this as I will be at the Swanage Jazz Festival this weekend. Mike Farmer

Straight no Chaser; Autumn Leaves; How Deep is the Ocean?; My Foolish Heart; My Favorite Things; Crazeology; I'll Remember April; 'Round Midnight; Cantaloupe Island; Unknown (I had to leave before the final number!)
