In an earlier post we contacted Art Themen about his acquisition of a Selmer Super Action tenor sax that had been previously owned by Ronnie Scott and, before that, Hank Mobley. LINK.
Although this fine album was recorded prior to Themen becoming the proud owner of such an enigmatic instrument the feeling conveyed here is that when the instrument did, three years later, eventually end up with Art Themen it had found a good and compatible home.
The tenorist doesn't actually sound like Scott or Mobley - he doesn't have to - but the feeling is there and I'm sure that it will appeal to fans of either of the above two legends and - another legend in the making - Art Themen.
Eight jazz standards that have Themen blowing pre-bop, post-bop, hard-bop, bossa-bop in fact any kind of bebop and beyond - way beyond. He's not blowing the day before yesterday, he's blowing the day before tomorrow.
Gareth Williams tremendous on piano, Dave Barry kicking ass on drums and Dave Green - a man for all seasons on bass - Art Themen couldn't have wished for a better rhythm section and they couldn't have wished for a better front man. Lance
